Your Guide to Boat Slips, Moorings & Dock Rentals
Finding the Right Slip. Choosing a boat slip is about more than just space — it's about access, protection, and convenience. Consider your vessel's length overall (LOA), beam width, and draft when evaluating available slips. Proximity to open water, fuel docks, and haul-out facilities can make or break your boating season.
Mooring vs. Slip vs. Dry Storage. A traditional marina slip offers the most convenience with dock-side amenities and easy boarding. Swing moorings are typically more affordable but require a dinghy to reach your boat. Dry storage (rack or trailer) protects your hull from marine growth but adds launch-and-retrieve time to every outing. The right choice depends on how often you boat and what level of access you need.
Marina Amenities to Consider. Modern marinas offer everything from shore power and potable water at each slip to Wi-Fi, pump-out stations, ship stores, restaurants, and pool access. Premium facilities may include concierge services, detailing, and fueling at the slip. Weigh amenity costs against your actual usage to find the best value.
Seasonal vs. Annual Agreements. Seasonal slip rentals suit fair-weather boaters and can save money in northern climates where winters shut down marinas. Annual leases offer price stability and guaranteed availability in high-demand locations. Many marinas offer early-bird discounts and waitlist priority for returning annual tenants.
Liveaboard Considerations. Living aboard your boat at a marina slip adds a unique set of requirements — from liveaboard permits and insurance riders to waste disposal regulations and mail delivery. Not all marinas allow liveaboards, and those that do often charge a premium. Research local zoning laws, Coast Guard regulations, and marina-specific rules before committing.
